Bill Scalia

Bill began martial arts with Isshinyu Karate in 1974. By the age of 15 had already earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. During his high school years be became an accomplished student of Wing Chun, but it was a competitive spirit which led him to take up the sweet science of boxing. Bill boxed throughout college. One day Bill came across an article in Black Belt Magazine which changed his life. The article was on Chai Sirisute and a fighting style which at the time was almost unheard of in the United States, Muay Thai. Bill sought out Chai through a Muay Thai instructor, Bob Karmel, founder of the renowned Fairtex Muay Thai Camp USA. At the time Bob was located in Philadelphia and Bill began training Muay Thai under Karmel in 1989. By training under Bob, and then Chai, Bill sharpened his muay thai skills. In 1993 he became one of the first Americans to become a certified instructor or "Kru" under Chai Sirisute and his system of Muay Thai.

Once again Black Belt Magazine would influence Bill's life, in 1992 Bill came across an article about a new style of fighting that was making big waves in the martial arts world. The article was about a family in Brazil named Gracie, and their Brazilian take on Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Feeling intrigued, in 1993 Bill began training BJJ in Philadelphia under Steve Maxwell. Maxwell had invited Royce Gracie to Philadelphia to teach Gracie Jiu Jitsu. As luck would have it, while in Philadelphia Royce met his now wife Marianne and would remain in Philadelphia for quite a while. During this time Bill devoted himself to learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and regularly would train with Royce. Aside from his lengthy and border line epic martial arts lineage, Bill also holds a bachelors degree in Physical Education from the University of Delaware where he also minored in athletic training. Bill worked with children for years as an elementary school teacher in Maple Shade, NJ. In 1998, Bill moved from the public schools and began owning and operating Kid Zone. There he worked with children, helping them develop everything from coordination and locomotion to athletic agility, strength and power.

Now at Mission MMA, Bill gets the best of both worlds. He can combine his passion for martial arts and his ability to connect with kids to greatly impact the lives of his students in a fun learning environment
